I’m a cool pilot Arch Hoxsey art doll by Jelena Dashunina-Naidjonok.
The idea to make a wooden Teddy bear came to me when I was preparing for a Teddy bear exhibition in Estonia “Teddy planet” (2012). This idea made me very excited because I finally found a way back to my major (wood carving). So that was the first time when I used wood as the material for my dolls.
While creating this doll I got inspired by the origins of Teddy bears. The legendary soft toy was developed in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. When reading about Theodore Roosevelt i found out that he became the first U.S. president to fly in an airplane. That story got me very interested. I even found a picture from his first flight. The pilot’s name was Arch Hoxsey. He was a famous American aviator.
I imagined how in the beginning of the century every boy wanted to become a pilot. The bear i created is one of these boys. He’s playing outside with a toy plane imagining he’s an Arch Hoxsey, Theodore’s Rooseveld’s pilot!
Materials: wood, leather.
As I’ve mentioned already Archie is made of wood. His vest, hat are made of suede. The inner side of his legs is covered with suede too, so they’re very soft and nice to touch.
